WHSA Safety Program Minimize
WHSA strives to maintain facilities that are safe for play.  While WHSA does not own the fields where games and programs are played; WHSA does take an active role in working with the local Board of Education and Municipal Recreation organizations in ensuring that facilities and equipment are maintained properly.

If you see or find a safety issue with any of the facilities please notify WHSA by email to:  WHSAHelp@verizon.net

NOTE: All goals should be secured with sand bags or spikes.  If you locate a goal that is not secured please let WHSA know via email.

Concussion Safety Minimize

The following information is provided for coaches, parents and players as an introduction to concussions and what are implications of a concussion.  The overall message is if you have a concussion it is better to miss one game than to miss a whole season.

This is not intended as a medical diagnosis and any suspected concussion should be evaluated by a health care professional experienced in evaluating for concussion

Lightning Policy Minimize

The following is the minimum requirements for WHSA activities where lightning may be possible or thunder is heard.

Coaches, trainers, referees, tournament and club officials have the overall responsibility for the safety of their players during practices and games. Before practice or game day check the forecasted weather conditions and the chance of thunderstorms. Parents or players should also remind coaches of approaching weather if it is apparent that the coaches/trainers are so immersed in practices or the game that they are unaware of the possible danger.

If you hear thunder your site is in danger of a lightning strike, regardless of how far or close you may think the thunder is from your location. Play/practice should be suspended and everyone evacuated to safe shelter until 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.  The trainer, coach or referee should time from the last occurrence of thunder being heard to determine when it is safe to return to the activity.

Recommendations for Safety

Safe shelter includes sturdy buildings or inside a vehicle with windows closed.

AVOID: Isolated trees, light poles or other tall objects, bodies of water, sheds, fences, bleachers, convertibles, tractors, bikes and motorcycles. Avoid leaning against buildings or vehicles [inside or outside].

If lightning threatens and a person cannot reach suitable shelter, he or she should assume a lightning-safe position: crouch on the ground with weight on the balls of the feet, keeping feet together and the head lowered and ears covered. Assume this position if you feel your hair stand on end, your skin tingle, or you hear crackling noises. Preferably in a depression or the lowest area of the surrounding ground.  Never lie flat on the ground.

Do not stay in a group. Stay several yards away from other people. Don't share a bleacher bench or huddle with other players.

First Aid for Lightning Strikes

·        Call 911 or have someone call 911. Get medical attention as quickly as possible.

·        If the victim has stopped breathing, begin rescue breathing. If the heart has stopped beating, a trained person should give CPR. If the person has a pulse and is breathing, address any other injuries.

·        Check for burns in two places. The injured person has received an electric shock and may be burned, both where struck and where the electricity left their body. Being struck by lightning can also cause nervous system damage, broken bones, and loss of hearing or eyesight. People struck by lightning carry no electrical charge and cannot shock other people.

  • Sports include — racquetball, squash, tennis, women’s lacrosse, basketball, women’s field hockey, badminton, paddleball, soccer, volleyball, baseball or softball, sponsored by a school, community or government agency

WHSA Soccer Info Line - Status & Cancellations Minimize
NOTE: Before going to the field, always check on field conditions and program/game/practice cancellations by contacting the WHSA Soccer Info Line @ 908-647-8342

Cancellations can occur up to 1 hour before program/game/practice start times, this includes Saturday games. Games/programs/practices in progress may also be delayed or cancelled due to changes in weather, especially lightning and thunder which require all players to leave the field for a minimum of 30 minutes - see our policy at Weather.  If weather changes during the day, all efforts will be made to update the Info Line.

So programs/games/practices with an early morning start time may be played and, if the weather changes during the day, later programs/games/practices may be cancelled.

Please note that the individual BOE and Town Recreation Departments determine if fields are open or closed and these decisions are often made early in the morning on weekends and in the afternoon on weekdays.

In addition, WHSA monitors radar to determine if weather will change for the better or worse before updating program/game/practice status. WHSA makes every effort to hold programs/games/practices on the day scheduled as there is limited or no opportunity to make up any cancellations and therefore WHSA will wait until up to an hour prior to the start time to cancel.
